Almost half of Kangaroo Island’s infrastructure, wildlife and terrain was decimated in the 2020 bushfires. 96 per cent of world-renowned Flinders Chase National Park - the location of Australian Walking Company’s Kangaroo Island Lodge Walk project.
About the Project
In partnership with the Kangaroo Island community, we provided direct assistance to locals whose homes, properties or businesses were impacted and provided food and water sources for affected wildlife.
The Issue
The Australian bushfires burnt more than 6 million hectares, devastating communities, industry, native habitats and wildlife. Almost half of Kangaroo Island’s infrastructure, wildlife and terrain was decimated including 96 per cent of world-renowned Flinders Chase National Park - the location of Australian Walking Company’s Kangaroo Island Lodge Walk project.
The Solution
We donated $30,000 to the KI Mayoral Relief and Recovery Bushfire Fund providing direct assistance to locals whose homes, properties or businesses were impacted and $5000 for community support initiatives.
Our partnership with various wildlife welfare and community support initiatives during the bushfires included provisioning of Community Vegetable Gardens at each of the three local schools, school uniforms for children that lost their homes, medical supplies donated to Island Care and donations to CFS volunteers based at Parndana.
A key project was the construction, distribution and maintenance of 400 wildlife water and food feeders across the bushfire affected areas in partnership with Kangaroo Island local Max Radnell. The initiative provided surviving wildlife with access to food and waters sources. The RSPCA joined the initiative in March 2020 furthering the reach of the feeders to distributing and maintaining our feeders inside the national parks.
