About the Project
In partnership with Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Services, the Discovery Ranger Program encourages visitors and locals to experience Tasmania's national parks and reserves through free community engagement activities.
The Issue
Educating visitors and locals on environmental protection and conservation, and providing the necessary skills and actions required to create sustainable national parks.
The Solution
The Discovery Ranger Program encourages local understanding and advocacy of conservation sites in an entertaining and informative way. The Tasmanian Walking Company and Parks and Wildlife Service partnership host public events on sustainability, leave no trace principles and shorebird protection. Visitors leave with an appreciation of these wilderness places.
The program provides funding for ranger salaries in national parks
The program locations include Cradle Mountain, Narawntapu, Mt Field, Mt William, Freycinet, Maria Island, Rocky Cape and Tasman; conservation areas such as Lillico Beach, Arthur-Pieman and the Bay of Fires and other north-east and north-west reserves.

Tasmania's award-winning Discovery Rangers are out in force every summer hosting Discovery Days in towns across the state and a range of activities in national parks reserves.
- Guided walks, evening talks, games for children and activities highlighting Tasmania’s unique landscape and native animals are free of charge and open to the entire community.
- The program includes an expanded Aboriginal Discovery Ranger program, presenting Tasmania’s rich Aboriginal heritage through a range of interactive activities.
- Mandarin-speaking rangers will be available to assist Chinese visitors at Freycinet, Mount Field, Maria Island and Cradle Mountain national parks.
