120 hi-tech nest boxes to support the vulnerable Greater Glider in Victoria
About the Project
Amidst the aftermath of devastating bushfires in Victoria, the Greater Glider Project emerged as a beacon of hope for the vulnerable Greater Glider population. As part of WWF-Australia's Regenerate Australia program, 120 high-tech nest boxes, designed to mimic tree hollows, were strategically deployed across Victoria, offering vital support in the face of habitat loss.
The Issue
Victoria's Greater Glider population faced a dire situation following the widespread destruction caused by bushfires. With a significant portion of their habitat lost, the gliders encountered a shortage of essential tree hollows, exacerbating their already precarious existence. In 2022 the Gliders were officially declare as “Endangered”.
The Solution
In response to the urgent need for intervention, WWF-Australia and partners collaborated to install 120 high-tech nest boxes across East Gippsland in Victoria providing the gliders with alternative shelters designed to closely resemble natural tree hollows.

The Impact
-
Since the installation of the nest boxes, Victoria's Greater Gliders have found refuge and support in these innovative structures. By offering a safe haven amidst habitat loss and environmental challenges, the nest boxes play a crucial role in safeguarding the future of this iconic species within Victoria. Through ongoing conservation efforts, the Greater Glider Project continues to inspire hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
